Some Facts about St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg is seen by the Russians themselves as a centre of culture, education, sophistication and liberalism. It’s the “most European” city in Russia, it was planned and built by a lot of top European architects of that time. It was the capital of the country in its most glorious decades.

St. Petersburg has produced 12 Nobel laureates, more than a third of the total coming from Russia and more than China, Canada, India, Spain or Argentine. In fact, if St. Petersburg would be placed in the country rankings of Nobel prize winners, it would be in the top 20. Most of them are in physics and math, but Pavlov and Brodsky are also on the list.

St. Petersburg is one of the biggest education centres in Russia with over 90 institutions of higher education and 350 research institutions.

It is no surprise then that many famous people from many different disciplines came from it and worked there. It’s a city of Dostoyevsky, Brodsky, Nabokov, Malevich, Faberge, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Baryshnikov, Nureyev, the world-famous Hermitage museum, Mariinsky Balley Theatre and many more. Literature and languages are particularly strongly represented, but even the most famous Russian footballer of the current times (Arshavin) is from St. Petersburg. Here’s a detailed (too detailed) list of famous people born in the city
